Explore the galaxy and upgrade your ship in order to reach LIGHTSPEED!

This is a prototype of a game within a game for another project I'm working on. The finished product will be a retro time-waster you play on an in-game computer with proper graphics, sounds, music, more encounters, more items, etc.

Nothing here is set in stone. Feel free to post comments, criticisms, bugs, suggestions, etc. I'd be curious to hear how easily you figured out the gameplay and how many runs it took you to beat the game.

Thanks for playing!

Just had multiple runs in a row where no higher-tier life support upgrades were offered, making it feel like it was literally impossible to get past a certain points. It feels unfair, and possibly unintended, that these upgrades are so rare when they're so important.

I did have a few runs at first where I got better life support at a decent rate, but after one run where I nearly won (only lost because I didn't understand the Antimatter Drive) they just stopped appearing entirely. I only get upgrades like the Overclock and Emergency bonuses, but no actual base capacity increases.

Thanks for trying it out! I noticed similar annoyances on my initial play throughs. There is a modifier that increases the chance of getting higher tier life support, chassis, and reactor upgrades in the shop if your current tier is lower, but it could probably use some tuning.

I've had some other ideas regarding items that might smooth out the loot table. Maybe doing something like a "bag of loot" where random items are pulled one-by-one from a shuffled set of items (so I can guarantee that essential upgrades will eventually be pulled). However, if you can't afford the essential upgrade when it's pulled from the bag, you might not see it again for a while. Another idea is to always allow life support, reactor, and chassis to be upgraded in a shop, but maybe make them more expensive so you actually have to plan ahead to purchase them.
